Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI)


If there's one thing that's critical in a high performance engine, then it's fuel control. Think about it: the whole objective of adding a turbocharger, of installing NOS, even of installing a free flow exhaust system, is to improve fuel delivery into the combustion chamber. It is also events in the combustion chamber that can and will destroy a high performance race engine if it's not controlled properly. Here we're talking about controlling the combustion process. Now I've heard many arguments as to why sidedraft carburetors provide better performance than fuel injection and engine management, and vice versa but I always say: it's not about performance, it's about reliability and there's no better system for fuel control than electronic fuel injection. Any endurance race car from INDY Car Racing, to Formula 1, to the World Rally Championship, to the Le Mans Series uses electronic fuel injection (EFI) systems, not just for reliability but because ensuring that the correct amount of fuel is delivered under every condition, will provide the best performance.

FI is central to engine management. It relies on an engine control unit (ECU) which processes a number of inputs from various sensors on the engine to deliver the correct amount of fuel at a particular RPM and air-flow rate/air density combination. The fuel is delivered through an injector, which is an electronically actuated solenoid valve. The amount of fuel that is delivered is dependent on the fuel pressure, which is usually a constant 30 psi above intake manifold pressure, and the pulse duration of the injector, i.e., the length of time the injector is held open.

ost EFI systems have a standard set of sensors. These include:

The Barometric Pressure (BARO) Sensor, which provides the ECU with the atmospheric air pressure reading.
The Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor, which provides the ECU with the engine's current operating temperature. This is important because fuel vaporization varies for different engine temperatures. A cold engine requires more fuel while a hot engine requires less.
The Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor, which the ECU needs to take into account when determining pulse duration.
The Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor, which is a tube positioned after the air filter in the air intake duct. The MAF sensor has a fine platinum wire that spans across the tube. The wire is heated by electrical current to maintain a constant temperature above ambient. The air flow past the wire cools the wire and more current is required to maintain the constant temperature. Thus, the amount of current required to maintain the constant temperature indicates the air flow rate. The air flow rate is divided by RPM to determine the pulse duration.
The Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) Sensor, which uses manifold vacuum to measure engine load. An EFI system that uses a MAP sensor does not require a MAF sensor as it can use the input from the MAP sensor to determine the required pulse duration.
The Oxygen Sensor (O2S), which is used to measure the amount of oxygen that is not consumed during combustion. This is important for the correct operation of the catalyst converter and is used for emissions control rather than performance or economy. The O2S is located in the exhaust system and is an after-the-fact measure of the air/fuel ratio. Too much unburnt fuel in the exhaust indicates a lean mixture while too little oxygen indicates a rich mixture.
The Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor, which is important for timing purposes as it tells the ECU which spark plug to fire and which injector to open at any given point in the Otto cycle.
The Throttle Position (TP) Sensor, which is another important sensor as the throttle position and the rate of change in the throttle position indicates the what the diver wants the car to do.

The Swiss Racing Team has announced two of their four drivers for the FIA GT1 championship .  Former F1 driver Karl Wendlinger will be the first of two drivers in one of the cars, Swedish driver Max Nilsson will be the first of two drivers in the second car.

Sumo Power GT, has signed a partnership agreement with NISMO (Nissan Motorsports International Co. Ltd.) to run two Nissan
GT-Rs in this year’s inaugural FIA GT1 World Championship.
One of the cars that will be campaigned this year was unveiled at the show, the 2010 racing GT-R making its first public
appearance in the UK.
For Sumo Power, the UK’s leading supplier of Japanese performance components, this is a new venture. However, the company
is part of the JRM Group (based in Rye East Sussex) and will therefore call on the resources of its sister company JR
Motorsports.
With no works teams permitted to compete in the Championship, NISMO will provide Sumo Power GT with technical support
throughout the season.
Managing Director for the JRM Group James Rumsey said: “I am delighted that we have been awarded the contract to run the
two GT-Rs. Working with NISMO is a great opportunity for us and the project fits perfectly into our company structure. We have
an experienced team of people already in place, a purpose-built premises with extensive engineering facilities and an existing
parts distribution operation. It’s going to be an exciting year ahead.”
The team are yet to announce the driver line-up for its two cars, but anticipates names will be confirmed in February.
The season starts in April and comprises 10 races in 10 different countries, with organisers reporting that there will be at least
24 cars on the grid

Wired posted a story about Nissan postage stamps that are being sold in Japan between February 1st and August 31. If you are into Nissans and in Japan, you can pick some up.

Both sets are 80-yen stamps, 10 to a sheet. They’re sold by the sheet only and will cost you 1,200 yen per. You’ve gotta get ‘em in person. Mail order? Sorry, “Not available,” postal officials say.

Led zepplin better word, "The song remains the same." Especially if you're an American fan of the old station wagon good. You're seeing the newly released-to-our-shepherd's-pie-eating-brother 2010 Subaru Legacy Wagon, and we (once again) can not have it.

Based entirely on the fifth-generation Legacy (built right in Indiana) who Tourer comes standard with a 2.0-liter boxer diesel engine mated to the factory six-speed manual transmission. Particular car, the Legacy Tourer 2.0D, to hustle himself to 60 mph in 9.5 seconds, going 120 mph and get about 38 mpg. Not bad. You can also go for the 2.5i Tourer 2.5-liter gasoline boxer engine and a new "Lineartronic" CVT, famous for its longitudinally mounted boxer engine in the rear, which sounds very efficient. Gasoline-powered cars about one second slower to 60 mph and will cost more while getting worse gas mileage. Cheap Car.



Subaru we want to remind us they are selling the American Outback (which is a boost Legacy Wagon with plastic cladding and a name derived from the Paul Hogan), the Forester (the other high rise Legacy derivatives with high roof just like a station wagon) and Tribeca (the less said here, the better). Oh, and the Impreza / WRX also comes as a five-door. Hey, IMS is the only cart. In fact, the only Subaru cars sold in the U.S. without the rear hatch is ... Legacy. Subie Hey, you know how you make all-wheel drive standard on every car and that helps distinguish you from competitors? Why not go all the trains, all the time and see how that differentiates you? Bad Batch of Engines Sends 309 GT-R’s in For Repair in Europe

 

There has been some buzzing in some of the European forums about a bad batch of VR38DETT engines in vehicles in Europe. The crankshaft bearings in early left hand drive cars have had an issue, and 309 cars are being recalled, engines and all ancillaries replaced, and returned to the owners. The affected vehicles are only in Europe, and this engine replacement does NOT affect the US, Japan, or the UK. 

 

- Nissan has identified a problem with crankshaft bearings in the earliest left-hand drive EU cars.
- There are 309 vehicles affected and the owners of each one is being contacted directly.
- These cars will have their complete engines replaced as well as ancillaries such as turbos and even oil cooler.
- This will occur at three locations which are the HPCs in Sweden and Greece for local markets and a new Amsterdam special facility for all mainland Europe.
- The following markets are NOT affected: US, Japan, UK.

Cadillac CTS Coupe 2011


We first witnessed the new Cadillac CTS Coupe at the 2008 North America International Auto Show in Detroit last year. Remaining true to the concept revealed there, the ready for prime time CTS Coupe is as stunning in person as it is in front of the camera lens.

“CTS Coupe is the new focal point of Cadillac, expressing both our technical and design capabilities,” said Bryan Nesbitt, Cadillac general manager. “It is intended to appeal to a new generation of car enthusiasts.”

Available in both rear-wheel and All-wheel drive format; the CTS Coupe is intended as a classic 2+2 layout. Power comes in the form of a direct injection 3.6L V6 engine mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed automatic transmission with Driver Shift Control (and available steering wheel mounted shift buttons) is optional. Performance is rated at a stellar 304 horsepower while still achieving a respectable 27 mpg highway.

Inside, features include integrated iPod/MP3 compatibility, a 40 gig hard drive, pop-up navigation system and BOSE 5.1 sound. Front seats are supremely comfortable with back seats providing adequate space for small to medium-sized occupants. Sales of the new CTS Coupe are expected to begin in spring 2010 with a “V” model making its debut later in the year.

2011 Subaru WRX STI


The current Subaru WRX STI and Impreza WRX are two favorites for many automotive sports car enthusiasts. Power and handling is first-class, with standard Subaru Symmetrical All-wheel drive providing incredible grip no matter road or weather conditions. Improving something so perfect seemed in many ways impossible.

Not for the engineers at Subaru. Weight saving is one of the best ways to increase performance and the WRX STI was put under the microscope. Anything that could be shed to aid in performance was eliminated. Upgrades for the 305 horsepower WRX STi include JDMI STI Spec wheels and a Nürburgring-tuned JDMI STI suspension.

Improvements for the Impreza WRX Limited add High-intensity Discharge (HID) headlights, leather-trimmed seats and SIRIUS satellite radio. Driving fast, while maintaining complete control of your sport sedan, just became a little more fun.

Mini Coupe Concept


It was 50 years ago that the iconic Mini was launched and to commemorate that event, the British automaker unveiled the Mini Coupe Concept, a 2-seat variant of this popular hatchback. The much lower roofline is accommodated by removing the car's rear bench seat, which increases the vehicle's luggage compartment from 5.7 to 8.8 cubic feet. The Coupe Concept rides has the same wheelbase and width as the standard Mini hatch, but is slightly longer overall while standing a full 2 inches lower. Mini is coy about whether or not the coupe will be built, but hints that the vehicle is capable of using the most powerful engine available in a Mini — the 208-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter four in the John Cooper Works edition.

Based on the Audi Le Mans Quattro concept car, Audi R8 was first unveiled at the 2003 Geneva Auto Show and 2003 International Motor Show. It has been equipped with 4.2 L FSI V8 engine; the same one that was used in the B7 Audi RS4. The engine provides power of 420 PS (414 hp/309 kW) and torque of 317 ft-lb (430 N-m). The transmission is either a manual gearbox, with metal gate, or an "R-tronic" gearbox (single-clutch semi-automatic sequential manual), which means the same options as in Lamborghini Gallardo.

Motor Trend magazine has named Subaru Outback Sport 2010 changed the Utility of the Year, the second year in a row that Subaru has won the prize.

For 2009, the redesigned Subaru Forester SUV won the coveted award.

"The 2010 Subaru Outback offers a unique combination of comfort, efficiency, flexibility and value," said Angus MacKenzie, Motor Trend editor in chief. "It boasts a car-like repair, drivability and gas mileage on the road, but it is as capable in the rough stuff like all but the most off-road sport utility focused."

Outback is selected from the fields of new or substantially upgraded vehicles, including many of today's popular crossover, which has been sold in 12 months from November 1 last year.

During the difficult economic climate in 2009, Subaru is one of the few car manufacturers who make consistent profits in the sale, from year to year.

"To win the award for the 2009 Forester is quite beautiful, but has won the 2010 Outback for this year truly remarkable achievement," said Thomas J. Doll, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, Subaru of America Inc. "Subaru Outback is an icon of performance and capability and the original SUV alternative. Now with improved strength, and increasing economic dimension is the complete package."

This R33 is pretty intense.  I really like the camera angle, it really helps to give you the feeling of acceleration. I will have to see if I can get that camera angle with a wide angle lens for some videos.

No real information on where the video came from or about the car, but I would guess around 1000hp , probably a 5 or 6 speed gearbox in it with a long first gear.

While the usual Subaru 086A is expected to be exactly the same as the Toyota version, although with subtle exterior / interior styling differences, the IMS high performance version will get the most attention now that the FT-86 concept has violated this ahead of the closing months of the Tokyo Motor Show. Course 086A utilizing standard Subaru EJ20 flat-four boxer engine with the D4-S direct injection, an Aisin 6-speed gearbox and rear differential as used in the Lexus IS250/350. The output of 200PS is said to have once again cited as being "almost certainly", but the rumors to the contrary from other sources as a minimum set of output 160PS. However, IMS version must answer the prayers of the people for more power.

Holiday Auto (HA) reported that the EJ25 STI version will use a 2.5L engine is expected to produce between 240 - 250PS enough, HA said, to transform into a true performance car 086A. An EJ25 turbo is not excluded, apparently Toyota / Subaru partnership has worked hard to listen to what customers want and if loud enough, can come through with increased STI 086A. In accordance with the Impreza WRX STI, which seems to IMS Version 086A will have a wider front and rear guard to accommodate a wider track with wheels and wider tires. Knowledge gathered from suspension tuning for the WRX STI will be used to improve the handling characteristics of the 086A, although the HA said that the short stop would have taken. We should also expect some additional aero parts STI just like a unique front bumper
the trunk and rear spoiler to give IMS a more inspired version to see motor sport.

Although not confirmed yet, there is a strong possibility the Subaru STI Version 086A will be displayed at the Tokyo Motor Show 2011 or shortly after the Tokyo Auto Salon 2012 and will hit showrooms shortly thereafter.

E85 Fueled GT-R Tuning Results

Tim Bailey, the head calibrator with Cobb tuning recently ran an R35 GT-R with E85 fuel on the dyno and obtained some impressive results.  E85 is a blended fuel of ethanol and gasoline. 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline.  E85 is 105 octane, and a renewable fuel. However it does have some downsides,but as this is an enthusiast blog, I won’t go into them much, look it up.  Here in California we only have a few places that you can purchase E85, and the energy contained within the fuel is lower than gasoline, so it takes more ethanol to go the same distance, and to make the same power. E85 fuel requires a retune, as the fuel requirements are about 30% higher than 100% gasoline.

The positives are that it is relatively cheap compared to a race fuel, and that it is available at the pump in a lot of places in the US.   Bailey took a GT-R with a midpipe, cat back exhaust , twin 255 fuel pumps, and 800 cc injectors, and put it on the dyno.

Because our injectors are mathematically ideal for ~30% higher flow it’s clear that the stock fuel pumps simply cannot keep up with higher duty cycle with 800cc injectors.To combat the lack of fuel we installed two walbro 255s in the place of the stock fuel pumps. The installation took about 4 hours total as the stock in tank fuel surge tank needed heavy but straightforward modification. With new fuel pumps installed we went back to the dyno with high hopes of sufficient fuel delivery.

Stock on 92 octane the car did 435 hp / 435 ft/lb . On 92 octane with the exhaust mods at 16.5 psi the car made 513 hp/512 ft/lbs. With the E85 in the tank, 18 psi of boost, the car made 574 hp/585 ft/lbs.  They think they can make over 600 whp on E85 with a few more tweaks.

First, we must dispel widespread rumors. Flip paint is actually 2 layers of different colors of paint, but one color, which breaks at certain angles.

It is a very special painting, which is actually a complex and complete patented process. There are several ways of doing, but certainly not a final can be obtained on the basis of DIY.

The color is actually a spectrum of light (things), even better. The high and low frequencies of the colors from infrared to ultraviolet.
