Time Lapse Engine Build : Cobb Time Attack R35

Cobb R35 Getting it

Cobb Tuning has been competing in the Redline Time Attack with their R35 this year. The car runs in the Modified class and won the modified class, and overall at New Jersey Motorsports park, after losing an engine at Buttonwillow.  After Buttonwillow the team replaced the expired engine with one from a wrecked street car.  They had a few issues at New Jersey, but not enough for them not to take the overall win.

At Las Vegas some issues from the wrecked street car engine reared their head, and the team decided to build the engine.  The next round of Redline Time Attack is at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Ca this weekend, May 29-30th.

The Redline Time Attack is going to be covered Live Streaming in a partnership with the guys at Owle. I was browsing some sites yesterday, and saw this neat add on for the iPhone. Its a better lens/ holding system for the iPhone that will give you good quality video for only $129. They will have up to a dozen cameras streaming at the same time, with some of them inside or on cars. John Naderi and Kerryann De La Cruz will also be in the paddock doing live interviews.

Switzer P800 Nissan GTR vs Koenigsegg CCR x 2 Races

Koenigsegg might be a name you have never heard of. They are a semi- obscure Swedish super car manufacturer that tried to purchase Saab in 2009 from General Motors.  However, they never carried though with the sale.
The CCR was produced from 2004-2006 by Koenigsegg, so this car is pretty rare. It was also listed as the “fastest production car” in the world, in 2005 to 2006 when the Bugatti Veyron beat it.  Power is listed as 896 hp, and weight is listed as 1180 kg (2601 lbs) dry giving it an impressive power to weight ratio.
On February 28, 2005, at 12.08 local time, the Koenigsegg CCR broke the production road car speed record, achieving a new official top speed of 387.37 km/h (240.7 mph) at hoi Italy's Nardo Prototipo proving ground. A team of five Koenigsegg engineers and mechanics together with founder Christian von Koenigsegg ran a technically standard CCR, driven by famous supercar test driver and veteran record breaker Loris Bicocchi.

In this video, from 2nd gear, the CCR clearly walks away from the Nissan GT-R at higher speeds. From the 1st gear roll, the CCR spins the tires , and then again in 2nd gear, giving the Nissan GT-R enough space to keep it out in front.  With nearly 900 hp, and more than 1000 lbs lighter than a GT-R, its suprising the CCR didn’t pull harder on the Switzer P800 GT-R.   I was just reading about a Switzer GTR 1RK 1000+hp GT-R on Nagtroc today.  Heres a sneak peak video.

Nissan GT-R’s at One Lap of America

onelapday1---09
onelapday1---37
This year there are two Nissan GT-R’s competing in the One Lap of America.  Last year the Continental sponsored Cannonball GT-R won overall  . This year Catesby Jones decided to pick up a 2010 GT-R to run in the event, with Forged Performance preparing the car for the event.  Follow the Catesby Jones GT-R here. Follow the Cannonball GT-R here.
The Tire Rack One Lap of America is the toughest 8 days of racing featuring the fastest street-legal cars on America's most challenging racetracks! Seasoned One Lap of America contender Catesby Jones who finished 3rd place overall last year decided to up the ante this year. Catesby went out and bought a beautiful white 2010 Nissan GT-R. We put our heads together and come up with a game plan for the project. The plan was to drop of his car brand new car at Forged Performance and pick it up a week later on the way to One Lap of America ready to compete! We didn't have a lot of time for this build so we knew we had to act fast. We ordered all the parts and immediately started going to work.
At the first event, the wet skidpad,  the 2009 winner Cannonball GT-R dominated with a 0.962 G average, followed by a 0.911 for the Catesby GT-R.  The one to watch Leh Keen in the Porsche GT2 came in 8th place with a 0.853 average.
The first roadcourse the Cannonballers hit was Road America.  Sliding into a 7:49.824 was Leh Keen in the Porsche GT2, followed by the Cannoball GT-R with a 7:52.457. The Catesby GT-R coming in 4th with a 7:55.987.

At Road America #2, again Leh Keen in the GT2 came in first with a 4:56.563 followed by the Catesby GT-R with a 4:59.720. The Cannonball GT-R came in 5th place at this event with a 5:05.702.
28609_388114232126_505642126_435490
The above picture is usually not a good sign, and it was not for the returning champion. The word is a loss of compression in one cylinder, and a drop out from the event.
28609_388114087126_505642126_435489
After Road America the Cannonballers transited to the Mid America Motorplex for their next two events starting at 8:30 am on Sunday May 2nd. At Mid America Motorplex, the GT2 again dominated with a 4:54.354 followed by the GT-R with a 5:01.400. During the 2nd round the GT2 slowed a little to a 4:54.905, and the GT-R improved to a 4:58.590 putting them 1-2 yet again.
nissan-gt-r-side-on-track
On Monday at Hallet, it was again the Porsche GT2 with a 4:11.014 in first, with the Catesby GT-R in 3rd 0.7 behind the 2nd place Corvette. In the 2nd Hallet event, the Porsche stayed firm in first with the GT-R this time 1 second in front of the Corvette with a 4:12.442.  After Hallet the group transited to Tulsa Dragway for drag racing and bracket racing. The quickest time was thrown down by Porsche 911(997)turbo with PDK that clocked a 10.904 1/4.  Coming in second was the Catesby GT-R with an 11.483.  The Porsche GT2 rolled into 5th place with a 11.629.  It would be interesting to see the mph that these cars ran for the ET’s. ET is how well you get the power to the ground, MPH shows the power and weight of the cars.   Bracket racing is bracket racing. I call it boring. A Honda Civic win. The GT-R and GT2 both went out in the same round finishing 6th.
21-one-lap-part-deux
After all the fun of bracket racing, the group headed to Gateway International for another two time trials. This sounds like a broken record, but Leh Keen in the GT2 finished in first with a 3:24.211, just 1.7 seconds back was Catesby in the GT-R with a 3:25.936. During the second time trial, the GT2 and GT-R both improved their times with the GT-R nudging closer in time, but still in 2nd place.  3:22.754 for the GT2, and a 3.23.751 for the GT-R.
That concludes the fun thus far.  Current Results with seven events left, eleven events completed.

Video : 9.62@148 mph SP Engineering GT-R

SP Engineering smashed the Nissan GT-R 1/4 mile record with a 9.62 @ 148 mph pass.  In this video Alex pilots the SP Engineering R35, and Hing pilots his R35 GT-R down the quarter mile.

Each car is modified with Greddy turbo kits, and a list of other parts to support 9 second quarter mile times. The breakthrough for the 9 second passes has been the work by several talented individuals working on decoding the stock TCM.

10 Reasons the 370Z is Better Than the GT-R : Import Tuner

SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

Carter from Import Tuner wrote in the May 2010 issue of Import Tuner Magazine, 10 reasons he likes the Z34 370Z , more than the R35 GT-R. The 370z is certainly a great sports car, but it does look like a redheaded stepchild next to the GT-R.

A couple of the reasons Carter likes the 370z.

10. Clutch pedal. Micro-second shifts are for the birds. I'll take my half-assed heel-toe over paddle shifters any day.

6. Curb weight. The R35 weighs in at around 600 lbs heftier than the Z34, or the equivalent of the former cast of Jon & Kate Plus Eight or one and a half The Biggest Loser contestant(s).

4. Price. Can you afford an R35? I sure can't. Take away the fact that I work in print-automotive print, at that-unless I made well into six figures, I'm more likely to score with Olivia Munn than an R35.

Twice in this short post, he mentions Olivia Munn. I think he might have a thing for her.  I will have to ask him. Those three points are all valid points.  The clutch is a sticking point for a lot of people, however for the future the third pedal is going away. Emissions requirements mean taking the shift control away from the driver.

Weight .  Well…. all wheel drive, twin turbo.  Yes its heavy. Its going to be heavy. If it were smaller, less powerful, slower, and had less amenities, we would call it a Mitsubishi Evo or a Subaru WRX.

impp_1006_01_o initial_timing under_chassis

7. Roadster. So this one's a bit of a stretch, I know. But still, the GT-R has not and does not come in an SPF-friendly iteration.

Roadster ? I think Carter might be turning gay on us. Next we know, he will be in a bright pink Miata or a New VW Beetle. I wonder if he sold his Nissan Skyline GT-R ?  Carter has had an R32 and an R33 Skyline GT-R.

2. Tunability. 370Z + Bolt-on modifications = GT-R killer. Proof? Super Lap Battle, November 2009: Our project Z34 (p. 66) spanked not one, but two modified R35s. Let that swirl around for a minute. Two, as in a pair of GT-Rs.

A 370z beating modified GT-R’s at the track ?  More a matter of the correct steering wheel gasket than the car.  The Greddy twin turbo, coilovers, 380mm braked, and Tyler McQuarrie driven Z did a 1:59 at Buttonwillow race 13.  Steve Millen in a stock GT-R managed a 1:56 during one magazines test.  The correct driver is worth seconds and seconds of time.

Rear wheel drive may be fun, but I like all wheel drive for that grip on the street, and on the track that just can’t be matched.

Nissan GT-R Spec M Rumors

Motor Trend is reporting more on the Nissan GT-R Spec M rumors that have been floating around the interweb. The R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R had a MSpec or “Man spec” version. It had softer dampening in the suspension, and leather interior. Less boy racer, more grand touring car.

2010-nissan-gt-r-spec-m-interior

The Spec M is supposed to take a spot above the Spec V with a sticker price of around $210,000 when it goes on sale in December. Only 30 cars are supposed to be built, making this a very limited production car for a company like Nissan.  One would almost wonder why they would even bother.

The Spec M interior is supposed to get upgrades with higher quality leathers, alcantra, and carbon fiber. Perhaps Nissan is looking at the Lexus LF-A, and trying out the market.

2010-nissan-gt-r-spec-v-rear

Other upgrades include a 15hp bump over the standard car, Spec V Carbon Ceramic Brembo brakes, new wheels , new gear ratios, and an extra oil cooler.

Don’t expect to see anything like this in the US.  The carbon brakes are a no, and enough people complain about Nissan dealers service on a $80k car, let alone a $200k car.

Brass Monkey GT-R Runs Over Porsche During World Challenge Race

One way to take a Porsche 911 out on the track, run over it.  Just after the start of the 2nd World Challenge race at St. Petersburg, going though the first set of corners, the #96 Nissan GT-R of Steve Ott, and the #57 Truspeed Porsche of Patrick Lindsay got together with the GT-R launching/driving over the front of the Porsche .  The nose of the GT-R was pointed up enough to get 3 wheels off the ground.   Both cars made it back to the pits with some damage.

World Challenge St. Petersburg Race 2 Results
I will have to look for some pictures and video, as it was pretty spectacular.  The accident affected our #18 car, as it could not avoid the #57 Porsche , now occupying most of the middle of the track, and the left rear of the car came into contact with the stopped Porsche.  From the pits, we could only see the right side of the car. We asked the spotters to look, and then I ran down to take a peak at a close corner.  The left rear tire had about 5 degrees of negative camber. 5 degrees is a little excessive for us. The hella flush guys, and the demon camber drift guys might disagree. We made the decision to keep him on the track. It turned out to be the right decision, as Robert was able to move up to 2nd place, and finish 2nd in both of the weekends races.

19 days in Long Beach, our backyard. I will be getting some more info, and some video of the Brass Monkey cars at that event.

R34-5 : What You Get When You Mix R34 and R35

Saw this over at the Clipping Point Blog. The pictures are from a Japanese auction, you can tell, they always look the same. Someone decided they liked the R35 so much that they would graft the front and rear onto an R34 Skyline. Interesting. Not sure what else to say than interesting.  The old saying goes, “the grass is always greener on the other side.”

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too

An R35 GT-R birthday cake.  Pretty cool.  An owner in the UK from the GTR.co.uk forums posted up a picture of his cake. No mention of how it tasted.  I tried some Motul brake fluid last night while bleeding the brakes on the World Challenge Scion, and I would not recommend eating brake fluid. Leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Press Release

Brass Monkey Racing to Bring Nissan GT-R to World Challenge

ANGLETON, Texas (Feb. 22, 2010) – Brass Monkey Racing has announced plans to campaign a pair of Nissan GT-R cars in the 2010 World Challenge GT Championship with the support of Nissan North America, Inc.

The announcement signals a renewed interest for Nissan, which last participated in World Challenge with a Touring Car effort in 2005. The twin-turbo, all-wheel-drive Nissan GT-R racecars are currently under construction at Brass Monkey Racing’s Texas-based race shop and will make their North American debut March 26-28, in St. Petersburg, Fla., at the hands of two-time series race winner Tony Rivera, of Missouri City, Texas, and rookie Steve Ott, of Houston.

“We’re very excited to bring such an iconic car to the North American professional road racing scene,” Brass Monkey Racing Team Owner A.J. Brass said. “After such a successful season in 2009, finishing third in the Championship and winning in our very first race, we look forward to the challenge of bringing an entirely new platform to World Challenge. With Nissan’s assistance and great engineering and driving, we expect to contend for the 2010 Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championships.”

“Nissan is very excited about the new Brass Monkey project,” Nissan North America Senior Manager – Motorsports, Wholesale and Collision Parts Growth Ron Stukenberg said. “This series aligns well with the performance of the GT-R and compliments the production attributes of the car. It’s great to have a Nissan compete in World Challenge after a brief hiatus. We look forward to having Tony and Steve at the front of the field in 2010.”

Brass noted that despite a compressed timeline to finish the new cars, they benefit from an already solid platform with the GT-R.

“Many of the cars in the series have serious modifications to the engines and drivelines from the stock vehicles,” Brass said. “The beauty of the GT-R is that it is an amazing platform to start with and we are able to utilize all of the stock internal components and drivetrain. With the exception of some of the approved series aerodynamic items and an effort to bring the car down to a competitive weight, the car will remain incredibly stock compared to most of our competition.”

Brass Monkey Racing was formed in 2009 with the support of Tax Masters. Its rookie season was a tremendous success, with Rivera, a relative unknown in professional racing, winning in the team’s very first attempt at Sebring in the team’s Porsche 911 GT3. He went on to win at Road America later in the season, finishing third in the Championship standings.

“I couldn’t be more excited about the 2010 season,” Rivera said. “I anticipate the Brass Monkey Nissans will become the most popular cars in the paddock because there is such an unbelievable following worldwide for the GT-R. My first racecar was a Showroom Stock B Nissan NX 2000, so it’s cool to be back in a Nissan – even though this one will be quite a bit different!”

Ott previously raced with Rivera with Brass Mitchell Racing, which later evolved into Brass Monkey Racing, in the 2008 Koni Challenge. Like Rivera, his roots are in SCCA Club Racing, where he finished on the podium at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. Running a partial season in the 2006 Champ Car Atlantic Championship, he scored good results with Newman Wachs Racing.

“I’ve always wanted to run World Challenge because of the single-driver format and amazing cars,” Ott said. “To have an opportunity to be a part of the Brass Monkey Nissan team is incredible and I can’t wait to begin testing for St. Petersburg.”

Brass Monkey Racing and its Nissan GT-R World Challenge effort will have support from Nissan, Tax Masters, Stoptech, Penske Shocks South Side Performance and Seibon Carbon. For more information about Brass Monkey Racing, please visit www.brassmonkey.com.

Sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing and managed by WC Vision, the World Challenge Championships represent the best production-based racing in the world. Utilizing a single driver format and standing starts for the 50-minute races, the series offers non-stop action in each of its three categories—GT, GTS and Touring Car. The series features 12 races at eight different venues in 2010, starting with a doubleheader weekend at the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in conjunction with the Indy Racing League, March 26-28. Tony Rivera

Like many talented drivers, Tony started racing-and winning-early. He ran Solo Nationals as a junior in high school and was the High School Drags champion in 1991 in Morrison, Colorado.

He went on to compete in many SCCA events, winning 12 Club Racing Divisional championships by 2007 and finding the podium three times in various classes at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. His domination of the 2008 IMSA Challenge GT3 Gold Cup class brought him a good deal of recognition and attention. He was approached by AJ Brass of Brass Monkey Racing late in 2008 about driving in the SPEED World Championship GT series and he jumped at the opportunity.
